What Type of Hammer Should I use for...

There are a million types of hammers out there. What's the difference? Hammers can fit into two base categories: soft or hard face. A soft face hammer, like a rubber mallet, is designed to provide striking power without damaging the surface you're hitting – wood or sheet metal are good examples of surfaces you might use a soft faced hammer on. Soft face hammers also reduce "bounce back" and absorb some energy from the strike, so they cause less stress on your striking arm.
